HW not detecting Launchpad Mk1

Post by David Baldwin »

I originally had a Launchpad MK1 but eventually change it for a Mk2 for its increased illumination. I kept the Mk1 for a later occasion. Many HW versions later, I would like to add it to my current configuration. I have connected it up and it appears in Device Manager under Other Devices as "Lauchpad". HW does not detect this. If I disconnect the Launch Pad MK1 lead it disappears from the Device Manager. Can someone help. It has to be a simple problem.

Hello David,

Note that Hauptwerk doesn't support 'hot-plugging' devices, so it's important that you exist Hauptwerk before plugging in, or unplugging, any audio/MIDI/USB devices. Please try:

- Exit Hauptwerk if it's running.

- Unplug the Launchpad Mk1 and plug it in again (which will reboot it). If connecting via a USB hub, make sure it's a good-quality model with a dedicated mains power supply, since Launchpads probably draw a fair amount of current.

- Re-launch Hauptwerk.

- Go to the MIDI Ports screen in Hauptwerk. You should see columns for the Launchpad Mk1 listed. Tick its column on both the "MIDI IN ports" tab, and on the "MIDI OUT ports" tab.

Does that solve it?
Best regards, Martin.

Hello Martin
The bad news is that hasn't made any difference. To reduce the current loading on the USB adaptor, I disconnected my MK2. Then followed your procedure. It still appears under "other devices" and not as a USB device and did not appear in HW.
I connected it my other Windows machine. It appeared there but also under "other devices". (By the way, a little logo also appears with it.)
Do I have to conclude that my MK1 ise nearly dead. I can't think of any other way to test it.
Regards
David

Maybe you need to install a driver for the mk1.

That driver is for the mini Mk1 which is differenr to Launchpad Mk1. I am pretty certain that Launchpad also ran natively. Thanks for your help.

I have downloaded the driver for windows 11 and initionally it looked. The Launchpad was no longer appearing in Others on the Device Manager but in Audio devices just above my Lauchpad Mk2. However, HW does not always detect it. It will detect if I do a restart on the compututer. If however, I start the computer after the power to it has been removed like 1st start of the day, it does not detect it. It only detects it from a restart, when the power has not been removed.

Hello David,

Perhaps Windows is putting it (or some other USB device to sleep). Try following these instructions (from the Hauptwerk advanced user guide) to prevent Windows putting things to sleep (especially its option for putting USB devices to sleep):
• Disable all Windows power-saving functions, including the options for putting USB ports/devices to sleep. For example, on Windows 10 you would use 'Windows Control Panel | System | Power and sleep | Additional power settings', select the 'High performance' power plan, then click its 'Change plan settings | Change advanced power settings', then make sure that the settings are set as follows:
Sleep: Hibernate after = Never (for 'plugged in' if present)
USB settings: USB selective suspend setting = Disabled (for 'plugged in' if present)
PCI Express: Link state power management = Off (for 'plugged in' if present)
If that doesn't solve it, perhaps try a different USB cable, and if that still doesn't solve it perhaps the device is malfunctioning erratically.
Best regards, Martin.

Thanks, David. Excellent.

Indeed, the improvement in in lamp brightness with the later models was significant.
